Maskne: A Genuine Challenge

What is “maskne”?

Maskne, scientifically known as “acne mechanica”, arises from excessive friction, heat, and pressure on the skin. Initially common among athletes due to prolonged wear of masks and straps, the COVID-19 era has made maskne more prevalent as face coverings are now essential in daily life.

Why does your mask trigger breakouts?

Acne bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes or P. acnes) naturally resides on human skin. While it’s a normal part of the skin’s microbiome, when it proliferates in pores and hair follicles, feeding on dead skin and oil, it triggers acne breakouts. The warmth and humidity generated by wearing a mask provide an ideal environment for P. acnes bacteria to thrive. Masks, acting as occlusives, trap oil, sweat, dirt, and makeup in pores, increasing the risk of clogged pores and breakouts. Prolonged mask wear also causes friction, leading to skin inflammation and susceptibility to infection.

How can you prevent maskne?

  • Opt for 100% cotton masks to reduce sweat and moisture buildup while remaining breathable.
  • Wash masks frequently to remove sweat, oil, and dirt.
  • Review your skincare routine, as mask occlusion can enhance the penetration of active ingredients, potentially compromising the skin’s moisture barrier. Consider reducing usage of active products and applying them only at night.
  • Keep skin well-moisturized to minimize friction from the mask.
  • Consider forgoing makeup on the lower half of your face to prevent pore clogging.
  • Cleanse your face nightly to remove makeup, oil, and dirt, followed by hydrating moisturization.
  • Carry multiple clean masks and change them periodically during prolonged wear.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Manage stress levels, as stress can exacerbate acne. Find ways to relax and decompress, particularly during challenging times.
  • Consult a dermatologist for severe acne, rashes, or allergic reactions.
